Evidence Based Medicine.

A dogma.

A mantra.

Proudly chanted by the medical community.

We are ‘following the science!’

Sounds reassuring – right?

Until you scratch just under the surface to see what that really means.

Because science is a methodology.

Pose a question. State your hypothesis.

Test it. And see!

Which gets me to my point.

Science is only ever going to be as good as the questions asked of it.

And what we have to ask ourselves is – who is asking the questions – and why.

Now – here lies the crux.

Because medical and pharmaceutical are in fact synonymous terms. Something I am only just starting to fully recognise.

Medical research – is largely evaluating pharmaceuticals.

Now – I hear many of you shouting at your screens – and I see those eyes rolling – duh Jude!

‘Big Pharma!’ OF COURSE!!!!!

But what may sound strange to you – is that many doctors don’t consider thier views to be influenced by the pharmaceutical agenda.

They are practicing evidence based medicine – remember?!

Objective. Truth.

The fact that the evidence produced (and published) for doctors – is inherently biased by those posing the questions – is an example – I would argue of unconscious bias.

Do I think evidence based medicine has improved medical care?

Yes – but do we need to be become more aware of how that evidence base is being built?

I would have to also say. Yes.

Dr Jude x
